There was a boy named E. W. who was at the school probably 12 or 15 years ago at the Family Foundation School who was struggling with self pity and resentment over his mother’s new marriage. Of course we especially, and Susan and Paul, were coaching him with all the program aid available. He was a good and fairly easy kid and usually cooperative. Then he got the news that his mom was pregnant. Not good news as far as he was concerned.
After the baby was born his family was scheduled for a visit and he was projecting all over the place and planning to let her know how he felt. I still remember talking to him while he was sweeping up after breakfast trying to help him to understand that his mom had a right to be happy and reminded him that he would be making his own life in the near future and that they didn’t include staying with her to keep her company for the rest of his life.
Then the door opened in the hall way where he was sweeping and he saw them coming in with the baby. He looked at the baby and began to cry. Then he smiled through his tears and reached for the baby. At that moment he looked like a beautiful young man who could never hurt anyone. He told his mom and step father he was sorry and that he was happy for them. I was blessed to be present to witness that conversion.
E. did very well after that and still is. This one made me cry again remembering the experience.
